Established in 1945, Brownings the Bakers Ltd. are an Award Winning business based in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.

We are very proud of our family run traditional business which continues to grow and diversify in a modern world. The management team at Brownings largely comprises of people who have worked at the company since leaving school.

1945

John Howie Browning & his wife Margaret establish JH Browning and Sons in Wellbeck Street, Kilmarnock.

1964

Margaret White, daughter of John and Margaret joins the company focusing on their retail units.

1968

Opened second shop with the bakery based below it at Hurlford Cross.

1975

4 retail shops.

1977

Bakery relocated 400 yards from Hurlford Cross to Galston Road.

1980

John and Margaret’s grandson John Gall joins the company.

1999

Relocated bakery to larger premises in Bonnyton Industrial Estate Kilmarnock… the present site.

2003

John Gall wins British Baker of the Year (still the only Scottish winner in 30 years). First produced the Kilmarnock Pie. Brownings wins Outstanding Performing Business at the Ayrshire Business Awards

2004

Brownings acquire Shorts the Bakers in Irvine along with 4 retail shops, increasing the number of shops to 12. Matthew Short joins as Technical and Financial Director.

2006

Brownings products supplied into a supermarket for the first time. 4 products supplied to 16 Aldi stores.

2008

Purchased the neighbouring factory in Bonnyton which became the Kilmarnock Pie Factory to free up space in the main bakery and to accommodate increased production of pies. Pie Factory start supplying Spar with a range of savoury products distributed to their stores across Scotland.

2009

Fraser Gall (John’s son) and 4th generation joins the business.

2010

Consolidated 12 shops to 8 with 5 in Kilmarnock, 2 in Irvine and 1 in Stewarton.

2012

Aberdeen Butteries win Great Taste Award.

2014

Kilmarnock Pie wins best pie in Scottish football. Invested £1.5m extending the bakery, more than doubling the size and building foundations for future growth. Started supplying Waitrose and Tesco. Aberdeen Butteries win Great Taste Award.

2015

Dotty Donuts range developed. Started supplying Scotmid.

2017

Brownings win the World Scotch Pie Championship picking up the ultimate accolade of best Scotch Pie in the world. Just under 200 staff, 13 vans, 8 shops, supply over 100 multiple retailers.

2018

Brownings win Scottish Baker of the Year 2018/2019.

2019

Kilmarnock Pie wins Best Pie in Scottish Football at the World Scotch Pie Championships. Sweet Potato and Lentil Korma Pie wins Best Vegan/Vegetarian Savoury at the World Scotch Pie Championships. Brownings launch their first ever national TV campaign with STV. Invited to Japan to showcase our product range and sell to customers at the Mitsukoshi British Fair Week.

2020

Started supplying Asda and Marks and Spencer. Brownings become main shirt sponsors of Kilmarnock Football Club after signing a three year deal. Reach the final of British Baker of the Year. Awarded best Apple Tart and Best Vegetarian Savoury at the World Scotich Pie Championships as well as runner up in the Scotch Pie category.

2021

Start supplying Sainsburys with our award winning Kilmarnock Pie.

2022

Brownings win the World Scotch Pie Championship for the second time after our Scotch Pie is named the best in the world!

Fraser Gall, 3rd generation of the Brownings family is promoted to Sales Director.
